Local Information

Mojacar is located in the Spanish region of Almeria on the Costa Calida (warm coast). This beautiful Moorish town developed from one of the most ancient communities in Spain with a history stretching back more than 4,000 years. For visitors, the old town is a delightful labyrinth of winding, cobbled streets with magnificent views to the mountains, sea and desert. Just two kilometres away, down at the seafront (playa) where La Mata is situated, you're in another world of modern day tourism with bustling beaches flanked by international bars and restaurants.

The beaches in the immediate vicinity consistently earn the European Blue Flag for cleanliness and offer an excellent range of activities - jet ski-ing, paragliding, canoeing, water ski-ing, sailing, windsurfing, banana boats and scuba diving. There are also countless children's parks and a mini-golf along the Playa.

Near the town of Vera, is the local aquapark where long flumes, pools and kids' play areas provide a fun family day out. The park is open from June until mid-September.

There's a diving school in Mojacar which caters for beginners and experienced divers and arranges excursions to some wonderful sites at Cabo de Gata.

This is a paradise for sports enthusiasts. Besides enjoying a full range of watersports, you can hire a micro light (complete with pilot if you're unqualified) at the resort's Indalo Wings Microlight Centre, or spend a day hiking, rock climbing, biking or trekking.

There are nearby horse riding centres, with one on Mojacar playa.

Golfers have a wealth of choice with numerous 18-hole courses within easy reach.

Oasys Mini Hollywood is near the town of Tabernas. This is a fun, family day out in the "badlands" of Almeria where you can enjoy wild west shoot-outs, a fantastic zoo and pool.

An interesting excursion is a visit to the famous troglodyte villages where modern-day cave dwellers have burrowed their extraordinary homes out of the soft rock. You'll find cave houses in several villages in Almeria including Alhabia, Gador, Benahadux, Fondon and Laujar de Andarax.  Sorbas has natural caves of outstanding beauty (wear trainers!).

The markets are on every day in surrounding areas and really awaken the senses.

The historic city of Granada, with its fabulous Alhambra Palace and Generalife Gardens, is only an hour and a half's drive west of Mojacar. Make sure you book tickets for the palace in advance if you go in high season because this is one of Spain's top tourist attractions and visitor numbers are restricted.

The liveliest nightlife is down at the seafront promenade where you'll find live music and entertainment in the bars and hotels until the small hours during the summer months.

The neighbouring town of Garrucha has some excellent seafood restaurants where the local specialty is the locally caught red shrimp.

Fiestas bring a riot of colour, music, dancing and street parades.
